Samsung has, out of the blue, announced its Galaxy Tab 3 tablet.

Despite being widely expected to unveil the device later in the year at IFA, Samsung has taken the wraps off its Galaxy Tab 3. The 7in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rival to the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD will launch in May – a 3G version will follow in June. See also: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 leaked in photo with specs.

Although we don’t have any pricing information yet, the Galaxy Tab 3 doesn’t generate much excitement based on its specifications. The tablet has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The 7in display has an unimpressive resolution of 1024 x 600.

Design-wise, the Galaxy Tab 3 is pretty much indistinguishable from the rest of Samsung’s devices. Looking like a slightly smaller version of the recently launched Galaxy Note 8.0.

Samsung describes it as a: “7-inch tablet featuring sleek design and enhanced capabilities that bring capabilities that bring better performance and multimedia experiences to your fingertips.”

Storage is a typical 8GB or 16GB but the Galaxy Tab 3 does have a microSD card slot for expansion, at least. There’s not much to shout about in the camera department either at 3Mp and 1.3Mp at the rear and front respectively. Connectivity is a standard affair of dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS.

So price pending, the only thing the Galaxy Tab 3 seems to have on its rivals is a microSD card slot. We will, of course, be looking to bring you a review of the tablet as soon as we can.

Nowadays lots of movie fans rip their DVD and Blu-ray movies to MP4 video in HD 720p/1080p with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Such kind of video may play well with VLC media player and various other media center app (XBMC, PLEX, Tiversity, etc), but it is not compatible with iPad. The iTunes simply would not accept MP4 video with AC3 – seems confusing but it is true – it only lets you add M4V videos with both AC3 and AAC audio track, or with AAC stereo exclusively. This rule also applies to Apple TV. And you can find the following passages from an Apple support page on encoding video for Apple TV :

“To create content for use with Apple TV, the movie must have two audio tracks:

- Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) stereo

- AC-3 track for surround

For compatibility, the following is required:

- Both tracks must be provided.

- The AAC track should be first and it must be enabled.

- The AC-3 track should appear after the AAC track and it should be disabled by default.

- The AC-3 track must also use the appropriate MPEG-4/ISO standard.”
