The Google Nexus 7 is a brilliant little tablet – small, powerful and so cheap that you can’t afford not to buy one. Though it’s not one of the best screens we’ve come across in tablet land, it’s plenty good enough to watch things on and easily competes with other 7-inch tablets. Watching movies on the Google Nexus 7 is a breeze thanks to the bundled Play Movies app. You can buy or rent films and TV shows from Google Play for generally quite reasonable prices. They can then be streamed or downloaded to your tablet and viewed through the Play Movies app. It’s a fairly basic player in terms of options but it does the important stuff: it plays your videos.

I tried a variety of different file types on it and all of them are played without a hitch, except for some AVI footage taken with camera. This is not surprising, even AVI is a supported format by Google Nexus 7, because AVI is a container format that can envelope multiple video and audio streams with different codecs that may not be supported by Android. It’s not a big deal anyway, as there are alternative players available on Google Play and some of them have much more comprehensive support to popular video formats (MKV, AVI, WMV, MPG, MTS, etc). However, it could be a problem when/if your file is of big size, say 4GB+, because the free storage space on Nexus 7 is limited, and there’s no slot for MicroSD card. In that case you’ll need an Android Video Converter to compress AVI to fit for your Nexus 7. Here’s how-to.
Required software:
Android Video Converter for Windows | Android Video Converter for Mac

Step 2. Select a Google Nexus 7 optimized export format.
Now you need to set a format for 1080p/720p HD AVI to 720p Google Nexus 7 conversion- click “Format”, find “Android”-> “Google Nexus 7 MPEG-4 (*.mp4)” format. This format shrinks a 100min movie to 1GB~ and still keeps good quality and aspect ratio.

Step 3. Convert HD AVI to Google Nexus 7 optimized H.264 MP4.
Click “Convert” button to start converting AVI to Google Nexus 7 optimized MP4 videos. If you would like to join several files together, just select these files and check the “Merge into one” box before clicking “Convert”. When conversion completes you can sync/put video onto Google Nexus 7 via USB connection.
